A Deep Dive into the New Cleveland Golf ZipCore XL Irons and Wedges for 2024

The new ZipCore XL and CBX 4 wedges by Cleveland Golf offer a clean transition of forgiveness and distance throughout your bag to help you play your best in 2024.

The new Cleveland Golf ZipCore XL and CBX 4 wedges for 2024.

Cleveland Golf has swung for the fences in 2024, launching their brand new ZipCore XL irons and CBX 4 wedges. Packed with innovative technologies and boasting forgiveness-focused designs, these clubs promise to take your game to new heights – whether you're a seasoned golfer or just starting out.

So, what makes the ZipCore XL series so special? Let's tee off and explore the key features:

Distance Powerhouse:

  • MainFrame Technology: Employing an AI-driven design process, MainFrame optimizes the clubface and weighting for explosive ball speeds and high launch angles. This translates to effortless distance, even on miss-hits, thanks to its generous sweet spot.

  • ZipCore XL Construction: The heart of the club lies in the ZipCore XL technology. This dual-density core features a soft inner core for exceptional feel and a high-strength outer core for maximum energy transfer at impact, resulting in longer, straighter shots.

Forgiveness Redefined:

  • Oversized Clubheads: Both irons and wedges boast larger clubheads compared to previous models, inspiring confidence at address and promoting off-center hit forgiveness.

  • High Moment of Inertia (MOI): Strategic weighting throughout the heads increases MOI, minimizing clubhead twisting on off-center strikes and delivering straighter ball flight, even on mishits.

Precision and Control:

  • Hydra Zip Grooves: Cleveland's proprietary groove technology combines dynamic blast lines and laser-milled micro grooves to maximize grip and spin, giving you control over trajectory and stopping power, especially on approach shots.

  • Variety of Lofts and Grinds: From the irons to the wedges, the ZipCore XL series offers a wide range of lofts and grinds to cater to individual swing styles and course conditions. Whether you need a high-launching pitching wedge or a versatile sand wedge, you'll find the perfect tool in the bag.

Who will benefit most from the ZipCore XL irons and wedges?

These clubs are designed for a broad spectrum of golfers:

  • High Handicappers: The oversized heads, high MOI, and forgiving nature of the ZipCore XL series make them ideal for players who prioritize forgiveness and effortless distance.

  • Mid Handicappers: The combination of distance, playability, and spin control offered by these clubs can help mid-handicappers elevate their game and shave strokes off their scorecard.

  • Seniors: The lightweight construction and larger sweet spot make the ZipCore XL irons and wedges ideal clubs for seniors who may struggle to swing heavier or less forgiving clubs.

Early Reviews are In:

Initial impressions of the ZipCore XL series have been overwhelmingly positive. Golfers praise the impressive distance, exceptional feel, and noticeable forgiveness compared to previous models. Many reviewers mentioned the confidence-inspiring head size and the ease of achieving high launch with the irons.

Availability and Pricing:

The Cleveland ZipCore XL irons and CBX 4 wedges are available for pre-order now and will be officially released on January 19th, 2024. The irons come in a 7-piece set (4i-PW) with steel or graphite shafts, priced at $899.99 and $999.99, respectively. Wedges are available individually or in wedge sets, with prices varying depending on configuration.

Final Verdict:

With their innovative technologies, focus on forgiveness, and commitment to playability, the Cleveland ZipCore XL irons and wedges are poised to be a major hit in 2024. If you're looking for clubs that can help you hit longer, straighter shots and elevate your overall game, the ZipCore XL series is definitely worth considering. Cleveland Launcher XL 2 Driver: Bombing Distance and Unbelievable Forgiveness

Say goodbye to off-center shots and hello to bombs with the Cleveland Launcher XL 2 driver. This forgiving beast features cutting-edge technology for maximum distance and accuracy. Read our review and see why!

The driver can be a source of both immense joy and crushing disappointment. But what if you could unlock explosive distance and pinpoint accuracy, all while minimizing the sting of off-center hits? That's the promise of the new Cleveland Launcher XL 2 driver, and let me tell you, it's a game-changer.

Pushing the Limits of Forgiveness

The first thing you'll notice about the Launcher XL 2 is its sheer size. It's the maximum allowable volume under the USGA rules, meaning a massive sweet spot that practically begs for mishits. But Cleveland didn't stop there. They've incorporated their revolutionary MainFrame XL Face Technology, a variable thickness design that flexes at impact to launch the ball faster and straighter, even on off-center strikes.

Imagine this: you catch a heel-side strike, but instead of a weak slice dribbling down the fairway, the Launcher XL 2 rockets off the face with surprising power and a hint of draw. That's the magic of MainFrame XL – it's like having a built-in cheat code for forgiveness.

Unleashing Distance Like Never Before

But the Launcher XL 2 isn't just about forgiveness; it's about distance, and boy, does it deliver. The combination of the expansive head, the MainFrame XL Face, and Cleveland's Rebound Frame technology creates a trampoline effect that propels the ball with explosive speed. You'll be leaving your playing partners speechless as you bomb drives past them, all thanks to the Launcher XL 2's distance-maximizing design.

Who Needs the Launcher XL 2 the Most?

While any golfer can benefit from the Launcher XL 2's forgiveness and distance, it's a particularly good fit for a few specific groups:

  • High handicappers: If you struggle with consistency, the Launcher XL 2's massive sweet spot will be your new best friend. You'll hit more fairways, gain valuable confidence, and see your scores drop.

  • Seniors: Swing speed naturally declines with age, but the Launcher XL 2's lightweight design and explosive face help you generate maximum distance, even with slower swings.

  • Golfers seeking more forgiveness: Even skilled golfers make mistakes. The Launcher XL 2's forgiveness will minimize the penalty of off-center strikes, allowing you to focus on strategy and shot-making.

Customizable Performance for Every Golfer

The Launcher XL 2 isn't a one-size-fits-all club. It comes in adjustable loft options (9°, 10.5°, and 12°) and a variety of premium shaft and grip options to ensure you get the perfect fit for your swing. Additionally, Cleveland offers their expert custom fitting service to dial in the Launcher XL 2 to your exact specifications.

The Verdict: A Must-Try for Distance Seekers and Forgiveness Fanatics

The Cleveland Launcher XL 2 driver is a technological marvel that redefines what's possible off the tee. Its combination of distance, forgiveness, and adjustability makes it a must-try for golfers of all skill levels. If you're looking to add bombs to your bag and take the guesswork out of your driver swing, the Launcher XL 2 is the answer.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cleveland Launcher XL 2 driver features MainFrame XL Face Technology for maximum forgiveness and ball speed.

  • Rebound Frame technology further optimizes launch and distance.

  • Massive sweet spot and lightweight design make it perfect for high handicappers and seniors.

  • Adjustable loft and customizable shaft and grip options ensure a perfect fit for every golfer.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a Cleveland Launcher XL 2 driver and experience the thrill of distance and forgiveness like never before. Your game will thank you for it.

Cleveland Golf Junior Review

Cleveland Golf's Junior Sets are available in three different options, with each club optimized for juniors in specific age and size ranges. Read our review here.

This equipment review is going to be a little different than what you’re probably used to reading from Adam.

You see, he’s an equipment junkie. Me on the other hand? Well, I bought my clubs second-hand off Facebook Marketplace because they were a good deal. If you’ve listened to the podcast enough you’ve heard me talk about the fact that I watch more than I play. I’ve never felt the need to spend a lot of money on new clubs that help improve my game when I’m not going to be on the course enough to use them. Half of improving your game is actually taking the time to play the game.

Cleveland Golf Junior - Medium

But my mindset changed when I had a kid and he had an interest in golf. (Or rather, we forced him to have an interest in it…) He walks around the house with his plastic fisher price clubs turning any and every toy into a golf ball. I wanted to get him a set of clubs but I was lost on where to even start, especially since he is so young.

Cleveland Golf Junior Set

Enter Cleveland Golf’s Junior set. They did the heavy lifting for me - I didn’t have to worry about putting together the perfect bag with the right amount of clubs for his skillset. They have standard sizes (small, medium, and large) for kids ages four to 12. The smallest set starts with three basic clubs, all you really need at that age when you are just learning the basics. The medium set has a few more and the large is a full-size junior set.

We went with the medium - which is a little big for my son at the moment - but it’s a set he will grow into as he learns the game. These aren’t toy clubs though, like the fisher price ones my son was used to playing with. These are made to the same standard as the adult size Cleveland clubs. The quality is unreal; now my son’s clubs are nicer than mine!

Cleveland Smart Sole 3 S and C Wedges Announced

The new Cleveland Smart Sole 3 wedge series are an update to the super popular game improvement option for those of us who struggle near the green.

SmartSole3_21.jpg

Cleveland Golf has officially announced the third generation of their popular super-game improvement wedges, the Smart Sole 3 S and C wedges. At a time in golf equipment when it seems the bounce and soles of wedges are growing by the inch (that's almost filthy and I'm sorry), the Cleveland Smart Sole 3 S and C wedges are certain to sell well. Golfers cannot get out of bunkers and high rough easily enough, which makes these new additions to this short game category a welcome sight.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

But just because I know what you're thinking, let's address the elephant in the room.

How is this any different from the Callaway Sure Out Wedge?

When I tested the Callaway Sure Out wedge a few months ago, I knew I found an answer to my bunker woes. Also featuring a wide-sole design, the Sure Out lived up to its name by helping me get out of the sand and high rough with ease. I call it my "cheater club." My friends hate me for it.

However, I was already well aware of past iterations from Cleveland Golf (and others) that featured similar builds. Heck, there are two generations of Smart Sole wedges easily found at golf resale websites. My wife has the Smart Sole 2.0 in her golf bag.

So what makes the 3.0 S or C any different from what is already available? At this point, it's all relative to what the respective company has released previously.

“We designed the Smart Sole 3 with the widest, most forgiving sole of any Cleveland Wedge in the market,” said Jeff Brunski, Director of Research and Development at Cleveland Golf’s Huntington Beach, Calif. headquarters. “That wide sole makes getting out of bunkers as easy as possible. The Smart Sole 3 also features Feel Balancing Technology which provides more consistent performance and better feel.”

Yeah, there are a lot of PR buzzwords in that quote, but the point is clear: Cleveland needed to release an update to the Smart Sole family, and doing so would require widening the wedge's build.

I've also been told that the differences between the new Cleveland offering and the Callaway Sure Out are substantial... depending on your point of view.

"Our Smart Sole 3.0 wedges have [a] three-tiered sole design for better play from all lies, not just the bunker," Noelle Zavaleta, Marketing Communications Specialist for Cleveland told me. "Our wedges also have feel balancing technology for more forgiveness across the face."

I like forgiving golf clubs as much as the next person, so let's look deeper.

cleveland smart sole 3 tech

Key Innovations in the Cleveland Smart Sole 3.0 Wedges

The three-tiered sole design that my new friend Noelle referenced provides the player with a ton of versatility around the greens. Depending on where you position the SS3 wedge at address -- hands forward, open club face, or any other variation you can think of -- a different "tier" of the club's sole will be used.

I've seen wedges with dual-sole designs in the past and can say there is a noticeable difference in playability. Tight lies on closely-mowed grass can be played as consistently as a fluffy lie in the rough; all that's required is a small adjustment in your address position.

It's like having three wedges in one! Sort of.

The Cleveland Smart Sole 3 wedges for Men’s steel and Women’s are priced at $119.99 MAP; Men’s graphite is priced at $129.99 MAP.

REVIEW: Cleveland Golf RTX-3 Wedges

The new Cleveland Golf RTX-3 wedges are possibly the best wedges on the market today. Check out our review of these amazing clubs here.

FullSizeRender-e1474849236604.jpg

The new Cleveland Golf RTX-3 wedges pack a ton of new technology in a classic wedge design that fans of the brand are bound to love. After playing with the wedges for about a month, I agree that these are possibly the best wedges on the market today. I can go into a bunch of detail on the tech that each wedge features, or I can let the brainiacs at Cleveland Golf tell you themselves. Yeah, let's do that.

Lot's of fancy words in that video. End of the day, the new RTX-3 wedges help you get the ball closer to the hole with a tighter shot dispersion than you've ever seen before.

From a playability standpoint, the Cleveland RTX-3 wedges excel in all areas. The different V-Shape sole grind options give the player a customized feel and bounce response that perfectly suits any playing conditions with which you are most comfortable. This promotes crisp contact with each shot regardless of distance or playing situation.

Cleveland RTX-3 sole

Each clubhead has a weight and shape that promotes confidence at address, even if you're opening the clubface to hit a flop or sand shot. The new Rotex face with New Tour Zip Grooves helps keep your golf ball on the green from any distance, even on miss hits off the toe or heel. Overall, I was extremely pleased with how well I was able to control my spin regardless of the quality of each strike. The versatility of each wedge also allows you to play pitch, chip, flop, or sand shots with ease.

The Cleveland Golf RTX-3 wedges come in three finish options: Tour Satin, Black Satin, and my personal favorite, the Tour Raw. You can also choose from the blade or cavity back clubhead to fit your preference.

Be sure to visit the Cleveland Golf RTX-3 featured page to learn more about each sole grind option to help you choose the right option for your game and playing conditions. Each wedge retails for $129.99.

REVIEW: Srixon Z 765 Irons

The new Srixon Z 765 irons look remarkably similar to their 745 predecessors, but their performance on the course sets them apart from other irons I've tried this year. Last year's rendition were highly praised by multiple club reviewers, all commenting on the clubs' consistency across the hitting area and distance gains throughout the set. The Srixon Z 765 irons improve on these features -- a feat I thought may have been unnecessary considering how good the previous set was -- making the newer model even more enjoyable to hit.

My review set featured stiff Miyazaki graphite (!) shafts at standard length. All other specifications were standard (loft, lie, etc.). It had been a very long time since I'd hit graphite shafts, so I knew I was in for a treat.

My stock 7-iron carry averages around 160 (depending on the day). After finding my groove a bit with the lighter Srixon Z 765's, I was able to surpass that average by about five yards. Certainly not mindblowing, but not insignificant.

Srixon Z 765 specs

The irons felt wonderful at impact. Despite hitting a few shots thin -- which is more a testament to my crap golf swing than the clubs themselves -- pure strikes featured a low, penetrating ball flight. Shots were easily shaped right or left, and miss hits remained on a true line within minimal distance loss.

Above all else, these clubs look great. I love the clean lines throughout the clubhead, the thin topline at address despite being a cavity back, and Srixon's black lettering on a chrome finish is classic.

Overall, I was very pleased with the Srixon Z 765 performance. While graphite shafts are not my preference, I could easily game these irons with high expectations and a great deal of comfort.

REVIEW: Cleveland Golf Huntington Beach Collection Putters

The new Cleveland Golf Huntington Beach putter collection are an amazing option for less than $100. Read our review of these fantastic putters here.

CG-HB6-L.jpg

The new budget-friendly and incredibly high performing Cleveland Golf Huntington Beach Collection putters are the latest and greatest from a company known for their attention to detail in the short game. I got a firsthand look at these exciting new putters and immediately put one in my golf bag. Not joking, folks. These putters are the real deal.

A photo posted by Adam (@golfunfiltered) on

The putter model I tried -- the Huntington Beach 6 -- is a classic mid-mallet design that features a compact putter head, hefty weight (360 grams) and attractive topline at address. According to Cleveland's description of the collection, these putters are "[i]nspired by the beautiful setting of Cleveland Golf's North America headquarters, these putters feature the classic designs that have been revered for generations with modern innovations that can help any golfer improve their scoring."

After rolling a few putts with this beauty, I can say I am convinced my scores will benefit from the tech in this flatstick.

Each Cleveland Golf Huntington Beach Collection putter features a Precision Milled Face that has a coarse, diamond-shaped milling pattern four times deeper than the previous-generation Classic Collection HB putters. The deeper milling pattern feel at impact while increasing friction for a truer, more consistent roll.

The soft, 304 Stainless Steel delivers a softer feel and is easier to bend for customization. Cleveland Golf's tensile strength testing confirms the 304 Stainless Steel is 51 percent softer than 17-4 Stainless Steel. In addition to enhanced feel, the Huntington Beach Collection can be customized to fit your stroke with an 8º range (+/- 4º) of lie angle bending.

When struck, every putt exudes a muted, soft feel that I adore and look for in any putter I buy. You can barely hear a sound when the ball impacts the putter's face, and the resulting roll is true and pure. You cannot help but have confidence when standing over the ball with these new Huntington Beach putters. They are fantastic.

The best part about these gorgeous putters? They retail for less than $100.

Yep. You read that right. You can bring one of these suckers home for a fraction of the cost of most any other club in your bag.

PREVIEW: Cleveland Golf TFi 2135 Mallet Putters

Check out this preview of the new TFi Mallet putters by Cleveland Golf, set to hit store shelves on September 16, 2016.

CLEVELAND GOLF® is proud to introduce their new TFi® 2135 Mallet Styles putters. These stylish new flatsticks launch on Friday, September 16, 2016. Four new Cleveland Golf TFi 2135 putter models incorporate 2135 Raised Alignment and the True Feel Innovation (TFi) insert in modern mallet shapes. With 2135 putter technology, the sightline is positioned at the exact center axis of the golf ball – 21.35 millimeters from the ground – to help achieve perfect putting alignment regardless of address position. If your eyes aren’t directly over the golf ball at address, a sightline on the bottom flange can cause misalignment.

The TFi insert features a milled, copper-infused aluminum face over a soft polymer layer to enhance feel. This technology also helps redistribute approximately 90 grams of mass to the perimeter of the putter body, which raises MOI for increased forgiveness and more distance on off-center putter impacts.

Each TFi 2135 mallet putter has a clean design with few distractions to emphasize the raised sightline and focus the golfer’s eyes on alignment.

Three different models – Elevado, Mezzo and Cero – are available in 33”, 34” and 35” length options with a Lamkin® Smooth Pistol grip at a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) of $159.99. The Elevado is also offered in a Counter Balanced model, which features a heavier putter head (+35 grams) and Lamkin Smooth Pistol Counter Balanced grip (+70 grams) for additional putting stroke stability. The Elevado CB is available in 35” and 38” length options at $199.99 MAP (TFi 2135 Mallet Styles are available in right-hand only).

For golfers who prefer an oversized, paddle-shaped grip with minimal tapering, Cleveland Golf is featuring the WinnPro X 1.32” grip as a standard custom option. This comfortable shape is made with Winn’s tacky Excel polymer material and is designed to reduce wrist movement during the stroke. The WinnPro X 1.32” grip is available at a $10.00 MAP upcharge in TFi 2135 Mallet Styles.

The DUFFIES: Best Golf Equipment and Apparel of 2014

Every year we at ChicagoDuffer.com have the privilege of testing the season's newest golf equipment and fashion from companies all over the world. While it is true that we have a soft spot for independent golf companies, it would be foolish to not appreciate the amazing products the "big brands" release every year. In an attempt to highlight which products were our favorite from this season, I am proud to unveil the inaugural DUFFIES -- a completely made-up trophy that will be awarded to the best of the best.

duffies trophy

So without further adieu, here are our votes for the best golf equipment and products from 2014:

callaway big bertha

Best Driver -- Callaway Big Bertha Alpha

We tested more than two dozen drivers this season, but we kept coming back to this magnificent boomstick time and time again. While it was not the longest driver we tested, the Callaway Big Bertha Alpha was far and away the most consistent and well-rounded of the bunch. It is still my driver of choice every time I step on the golf course, and it is going to take a small miracle for another club to replace it in my bag.

ping i25 irons head

Best Irons -- PING i25

Nobody produced a better mid-handicap set of irons than the folks at PING. Their incredible PING i25 iron set not only catered to those of us who aren't cool enough to play blades but still wanted shot-shaping ability, but they also look and feel amazing. They might be a step away from the "traditional" PING iron look, but we could not find a set of sticks that fit our game better.

rtx wedge

Best Wedges -- Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0

Don't let the annoying numbers in their name fool you: hitting the Cleveland 588 RTX 2.0 wedges are easy as pie and require little to no math. Unless, of course, you need help adding up all the money you'll take from your friends with these in your bag. Their look, feel, and performance stood above the rest in the wedge market, and that is no small task.

nike method mod 90

Best Putter -- Nike Golf Method MOD 90

Ok, this putter was released toward the end of 2013, but we have to include it here. Nike Golf is making some incredible golf clubs as of late, and that is exemplified in their impressive Method MOD 90 putter. I'm usually a fan of mallet putters, but this ultra-thin blade design felt too good and performed too well to not keep it in my bag.

3up golf 2s14

Best Golf Ball -- 3UP Golf 2S14

Everyone loves the Titleist Pro V golf balls, but you can keep them for all I care. No matter which category I can think of -- distance, feel, spin, durability -- the 3Up Golf 2S14 golf ball rose handedly above the rest. Don't let the fact that 3UP is an indie golf brand scare you; these guys make a damn fine product.

Best Overall Apparel Company -- Bunker Mentality and Dunning Golf (tie)

This was a difficult choice for me since I love both companies so much. So, instead of choosing one over the other, let's all play nice and share! The UK-based Bunker Mentality specializes in providing highly-personable golf apparel that scream individuality. Conversely, the US-based Dunning Golf exudes traditional charm and high performance. While these two juggernauts may reside on opposite ends of the fashion spectrum, they both make up most of my golf wardrobe.

Cleveland Golf 588 Altitude Driver Review

fullhero-e1383016490889.png

cleveland golf 588 altitudeCleveland Golf has quickly risen to a top contender for best drivers in golf over the last few years, so it should come as no surprise that their new 588 Altitude driver continues that trend. Simply put, the entire premise of the Cleveland Golf 588 Altitude driver is to help you get your golf ball airborne... and to keep it there for as long as possible.

I had the chance to test out the Cleveland Golf 588 Altitude driver this week and can safely say it delivers on its promise. I was able to routinely pound drives further than my current TaylorMade R1, which was slightly unexpected. Then again, I should have realized a name like "Altitude" was a huge clue.

The club's look and feel is pleasing to the eye and hands, which most golfers will find to be critical to their confidence on the tee box. Cleveland has spent a lot of time perfecting the balance between offering an ultralight driver (270 grams) with a sense of stability throughout the club, promoting increased control throughout your swing.

Weight in the driver is distributed lower and deeper than most drivers on the market, adding to the lift you will immediately notice on each tee shot you hit. Finally, the stock Premium Matrix Radix Shaft is designed for a mid-to-high launch without compromising a smooth feel and explosive clubhead speed through impact.

The Cleveland Golf 588 Altitude driver will hit retail stores on November 15th and will be available in 9-degree, 10.5-degree or 12-degrees of loft.

Exclusive: Cleveland Golf Smart Square Putter Announced

hqdefaultHUNTINGTON BEACH, CA – October 7, 2013 – Cleveland® Golf has always prided itself on leading the way in short game innovation with wedge designs and technologies that help players of all abilities hit the ball closer to the hole. Cleveland® Golf is now pleased to introduce the new Smart Square putter, which will enhance golfers’ ability to find the bottom of the cup. Following intensive research into the most successful putters of all time and what golfers focus on when they align a putt, the new Smart Square incorporates alignment technology that has proven to be the most advanced – and simplest – that Cleveland® Golf has ever created.

The key to the Smart Square is Dual Axis Alignment. Two squares create parallel lines that frame the ball at address and provide a clear visual path to the hole. They also generate two perpendicular lines that easily highlight when the putter is misaligned – even by a fraction of a degree. Cleveland® Golf’s testing shows players aligned the Smart Square 23% more accurately than one of the most popular putters of all time.

The Smart Square promotes consistent roll with a copolymer face insert, which also enhances feel and sound at impact. Its high MOI design also minimizes distance loss on off-center hits.

The Smart Square is available in three different options to suit a variety of stroke preferences. There are heel- and center-shafted versions available in standard lengths. There’s also a 39-inch Almost Belly, with a heavier putter head (40 grams more than standard) and grip (2.5 times heavier than standard) to create counter-balanced weighting that adds stroke stability and consistency without anchoring.

Smart Square putters launch on November 15, 2013, and are available for pre-booking beginning October 15, 2013. MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) is $139.99 for standard lengths and $179.99 for the Almost Belly. Visit www.smartsquareputter.com for more information.
