Perhaps the most important factor regarding lie angle adjustments relates to how this measurement can affect ball flight and direction. Believe it or not, your snap hook might be a symptom of an improperly fit lie angle for your swing.

In the video above I break this concept down to explain how lie angles can be too upright or too flat, relative to an individual golfer’s swing. This is explained in the context of my irons being too upright following multiple sessions hitting off hard driving range mats. When you’re using forged irons, inadvertently bending your lie angle from hitting off harder surfaces is a common issue.

Just to make things a little more complicated, it’s also important to understand the difference between the actual measurement of a club’s lie angle and the relative angle of the club and the ground at address. If that sounds confusing, trust me, you’re not alone.

In the videos above I attempt to explain this concept by demonstrating how a loft and lie machine is a helpful tool for this purpose. Understanding this concept helps to also understand the terminology of “upright” or “flat” in regard to lie angle adjustments. At the end of the day: you should let a certified professional club fitter do this for you.

Sub 70 Golf’s partnership with golf legend Tommy Armour III has brought us the outstanding TAIII Wedges. Geared for players who love a classic design but need a slight boost in forgiveness, these high-toe, micro-groove wedges are one of the more exciting offerings Sub 70 has released in recent years.

The Sub 70 TAIII wedges offer a lot of modern design favorites in a head shape that is both classic and versatile. Retailing at $135 per wedge, the TAIII is still a bargain considering the features packed into each.

Tommy Armour III’s input into the design of this wedge is evident. Its design includes a high-toe face that unlocks a wider range of shot options from around the green while a thin, rounded sole promotes maximum feel regardless of lie or terrain. Low-to-Mid-handicap players will enjoy the shot type and trajectory options the TAIII wedges offer, particularly when you need to simply get out of trouble and safely on the putting surface.

Most notable on the TAIII wedges are the milled micro-grooves across the face. Smaller, narrower grooves are placed between each individual “regular” groove, providing an incredible amount of spin and control on every shot. While a feature seen in many modern competitor models, you’ll be hard-pressed to find this characteristic on wedges in this price range.

Performance and Feel

The Sub 70 TAIII wedge — available in three different finish options — feels soft and percussive at impact without any harsh “blade-like” sensation on miss-hits.

I found the micro-grooves to be the real deal in terms of shot control on chips and pitches while also showing a significant boost in spin numbers on full shots. As someone who doesn’t usually promote a ton of backspin in my short game, this was an eye-opening quality that I noticed right away.

Laying the wedge face open offered more hitting area thanks to their high-toe profile, which is particularly useful when those delicate chips creep closer to the toe. I need this extra real estate in this area of my game due to that swing characteristic, and the TAIII wedges deliver nicely.

The versatile and flexibility allotted by the TAIII wedges is evident, particularly out of bunkers and tall rough. I appreciate the narrow, rounded sole on each wedge as they glide easily through either terrain without digging too deep. As someone who plays in the Midwest where the turf can be soft one day and dry the next, having less to worry about in terms of turf interaction is a positive.

Overall Impression

I’m very happy with the Sub 70 TAIII wedges if nothing else for their high-spin qualities and high-toe design. The overall appearance of the wedge, complete with a unique “layered” metal design on the back of the head, is attractive without being too distracting. Sub 70’s wide catalogue of loft, shaft, and grip options allows golfers to fine-tune each individual wedge to meet their needs nicely.

MacGregor MACTEC Driver Review

For golfers looking to save a few dollars this golf season, the MacGregor MACTEC driver is a great option to consider. With modern design elements coupled with a minimalist, classic shape, the MACTEC driver offers a lot to like despite a lack in adjustability.

Retailing at only $149.99, the MacGregor MACTEC driver is solely in the budget-friendly, direct-to-consumer space that has grown in popularity over the years. Golfers within this budget range should know what to expect from a driver at this price… and what NOT to expect.

The MACTEC driver features a pure high-grade titanium head with a classic, clean matte black crown. The driver’s sole features a black glossy sheen that is sure to pique the interest of traditional and modern golfers alike. A single adjustable weight toward the back of the head assists with launch and spin, which you can swap out to fit your preferred specifications. (Note: our review driver did not include interchangeable weights)

The MACTEC driver is a non-adjustable club in terms of loft and lie angle, but MacGregor does offer the driver in three loft options: 9-, 10.5, and 12-degrees. You can also choose from an array of golf shaft options on the brand’s website to fine-tune your club to your preference.

PERFORMANCE AND FEEL

You don’t need a ton of adjustability options to build a really great driver, and the MACTEC proves this point.

At address, the driver looks fantastic for fans of minimal alignment aides or graphics on the crown. The classic round shape of the driver head frames the golf ball beautifully, and it sits square to the target at address. I’ve grown to appreciate the non-glare aspects of a matte finish on drivers, which MacGregor does a good job of including in this club.

At impact, the driver feels very solid and powerful… however this club is very, very loud. Some golfers might find that to be distracting, and I am a player who prefers a more muted, percussive sound at impact. The MACTEC is the opposite of that: sharp and “tinny.” I was surprised at the volume of the driver during my review, to be honest.

Regardless, drives with the MACTEC were straight and true, offering ball speeds around what I’d expect with a club in this category. I was able to replicate preferred carry distances drive after drive, which is really all that matters with a driver. It’s safe to say this isn’t the longest driver I’ve ever hit, but it is very forgiving and consistent in terms of distance, carry, and shot dispersion.

How does it stack up?

While I don’t love making comparisons to other brands, it’s worth noting the MacGregor MACTEC driver holds its own against higher-priced alternatives in the market.

Ball speed, launch and forgiveness continue to be the biggest factors in the driver space for golfers of any handicap level. The MACTEC driver isn’t the longest in the game, but it might be one of the longest at this price point.

My current gamer driver, for example, is the Callaway Paradym Triple Diamond equipped with a VA Drago premium shaft. This is a driver I’ve been fit for and purchased on my own after a thorough club fitting. When hit well, I can eclipse ball speeds greater than 165 mph with total distance approaching 310 yards.

The MACTEC driver — equipped with a HZRDUS Smoke Black shaft — provided me between 150-155 mph in ball speed and total distance between 275-285 yards. While these results should not be seen as typical for all golfers, and there are of course multiple variables for any given day, what this told me was that technology matters relative to your goals. There is no reason why I wouldn’t be able to game the MACTEC comfortably.

Overall Impression

The MacGregor MACTEC driver is a perfect option for newer golfers or those who are looking for a new upgrade without breaking the bank. The $149.99 price tag tells you all you need to know in terms of what to expect from this club. What the MACTEC lacks in expensive bells and whistles of competing big-brand options, it excels in consistency and forgiveness.
