VIDEO: Hitting hickory golf clubs on the driving range

Ever wonder how the old hickory golf clubs compare to modern day golf clubs? I took a couple to my local driving range to find out.

Golf club technology has improved dramatically since the game's inception, ranging from the original hickory-shafted mashies and niblicks to the muscleback blades of today. But how do these clubs compare in terms of performance? I recently found a couple Windsor hickory mashies at a local estate sale ($2 a piece!) and wanted to find out. So I grabbed my Voice Caddie ball launch monitor, my car keys, and headed out to my local range.

The results can be seen in the video below. I start off with hitting my Mizuno MP-5 seven iron to warm up (average carry 155 yards), switch to a few shots with a 5-mashie, and finally a 2-mashie. Despite having a sweet spot the size of a dime and clubheads as thin as butter knives, the antique clubs actually felt solid went hit pure.

As you can tell by the video, the clubs took come getting used to. Enjoy.

How to Practice Your Golf Swing in Secret: #SecretRange

Have you practiced your golf swing at work, in class, or at the grocery store? You might be part of the #SecretRange. Read more here.

secretrange.jpg

We at Golf Unfiltered understand who our readers are. We know that you are the type of golf fan who thinks about the game as much as your family. Sometimes, you think about golf more than your family.

You want to know more about the game than what television shows us or that you experience at your local municipal course. You're interested in equipment reviews, how golf balls spin, why moment of inertia is important, and why touring professionals are so quirky.

But most importantly, you study the golf swing. You practice it. You research it. You obsess about it.

So, you are probably one of the many golf nuts who spend time on the driving range in your mind. The "Secret Range." The one you visit when no one is looking, and not always at an actual golf course.

What's the #SecretRange?

You defined what we all do in secret.

That guy you see practicing the overlap grip with a pen in your weekly meeting? He gets it.

Your friend's apartment with golf club marks on her ceiling? She gets it.

Your coworker who pauses in front of the full-length mirror to check his address position? He gets it.

The lady in line at Starbucks who shifts from one foot to the next, with maybe a bit of hip rotation? She gets it, too.

We encourage you to share your stories of the time you witnessed someone practicing on their #SecretRange, or when you caught yourself doing the same. Reach out to us on Twitter with the hashtag #SecretRange to share your story.

VIDEO: Watch this hilarious driving range swing

driving-range.png

Everyone has seen bad golf swings on the driving range, but this one might be the all-time leader in the clubhouse. Earlier in the week this video of some poor fellow failing spectacularly at pounding a fairway wood went viral on Twitter, and we can't stop watching it.

You have to give this guy an 'A' for effort, but that's about where the accolades end. Let's dive a little deeper.

  1. It looks like he's at his local Top Golf location, which right away grabs our attention (love us some TG.) The problem, of course, is that you only need to slap a short iron out into a TopGolf range to score any points. So he's obviously showing off for someone.
  2. The split-hand grip suggests our Driving Range Hero once played baseball. However, his complete ineptitude at a proper weight shift squashes that theory.
  3. He fell into that stall divider really freakin' hard.

Keep at it, sir. You'll get the golf swing figured out eventually. Or not.

VIDEO: Watch Jordan Spieth hit the worst golf shot ever

An Instagram video has surfaced showing Jordan Spieth hitting one of the worst golf shots of all time on the driving range. Check this out.

jordanspiethshot.png

Jordan Spieth has been struggling recently with his game, so when this Instagram video surfaced of the Wonder Kid almost killing everyone on the driving range you couldn't help but laugh. We come across a ton of funny golf videos over the interwebs, and while we don't repost many on this site, some are just too good to pass over.

Spieth is warming up on the driving range prior to a tournament round (not sure which tournament; help me out, internet detectives!) and standing a little too close to the tee marker. What happens next is something that can only be described as "DUCK!!" (Video is a regram from @Golf_Gods)

A video posted by Adam (@golfunfiltered) on

You have to love Spieth's reaction when he has absolutely no idea where that golf ball flew after ricocheting off the tee marker. I can't tell if that was a pure hosel-rocket, a skulled wedge, or the thinnest-struck shot in the history of professional golf. Whatever happened, Spieth managed to hit the tee marker and his basket of balls in one swing. That's some Grade-A shankapotomous skill, folks.

Luckily this took place on the range and not during competition.

Though I'm not gonna lie: I've 100 percent had this happen to me during a round.
