MacGregor MT-86 Pro Irons Review

The newly released MacGregor MT-86 Pro irons are a classic reminder of golf’s tradition and history, offering players a traditionally-shaped blade design combined with modern players-distance technology. Also available in an oversized version for more forgiveness, the MacGregor MT-86 Pro irons are some of the best-looking and feeling clubs I’ve tried this year.

MacGregor MT-86 Pro Technology and Features

When I first heard these irons were being released in 2023, I knew I had to pick up a set for myself. I’ve owned a few sets of MacGregor irons over the years, enjoying their classic builds and old-school feel. The newly updated MT-86 irons harken back to that time, offering fans of traditional blade-like designs something to be excited about.

Make no mistake: while these irons have all the qualities of an old-school blade, they are anything but. The MT-86’s fit better in the modern players distance category, offering a foam-filled head, slightly wider sole, internal weighting while maintaining a thin top line. Lofts throughout the set are slightly on the strong side (for reference, the stock 7-iron loft is 33-degrees) yet very much on par with other modern sets.

What will undoubtedly catch any golfer’s eye is the absolutely gorgeous satin chrome finish and minimal MacGregor logo, which blend together to offer one of the prettiest irons you’ll see.

Feel and Performance

If a golf club looks as clean and sleek as the MacGregor MT-86 Pro, you’re going to expect feel and performance that matches it. Luckily, these irons do exactly that… with one exception.

At impact the MT-86’s feel awesome, especially when hit on the sweet spot. The sound is deep and percussive thanks to the internal foam in each clubhead. Ball flight was as you’d expect from irons with these lofts, however the weighting system helped with launch and keeping the ball in the air.

Where the MT-86 struggled for me was on miss-hits. While distance forgiveness was adequate, the sound of shots hit off the toe or heel was a little harsh. Turf interaction with these irons felt hit-or-miss due to the rounded sole on each head, especially since many competing irons offer V-chamber or tapered soles to help with in this area. Just to be clear: these irons feel like classic irons did, but when hit squarely offered performance that only modern tech can provide.

Overall Impression

The MacGregor MT-86 Pro irons offer a ton to enjoy in a traditionally-designed iron with modern tech and flair. They feel absolutely incredible when hit flush, yet punitive enough when you miss one. In general, you can’t ask much more from an iron that wants to be in the “Pro” category.

Feedback in your hands is extremely important to understand where your ballstriking needs to improve. These irons provide that feedback; however, be warned if you do miss one during your round.

For me, these irons will be a keepsake and a reminder of how I learned the game years ago having played MacGregor irons in my childhood. Sometimes, that’s all you need to enjoy the game even more.
