Mizuno JPX 923 Forged Irons Review

The upgraded Mizuno JPX 923 irons are yet another triumph in the brand’s popular players distance category, providing golfers incredible forgiveness and consistency with every shot. For the purpose of this review, I was fit into the JPX 923 Forged irons, which are just one of five possible variants in the new line.

I had the opportunity to get fit by Mizuno’s Chris Campbell in January, which you can watch on our YouTube Channel here.

Let’s dive deeper into the JPX 923 irons.

Mizuno JPX 923 Forged Iron Technology

Since its inception years ago, Mizuno’s JPX iron series focuses on forgiveness, distance and consistency for golfers of any caliber. Not to be confused with the brand’s Pro or “MP” series, the JPX features modern cavity back designs and tech to stay true to its mission.

The JPX 923 Forged irons are no exception to this design, but with a muted cavity casing developed through Mizuno’s one-piece grain flow forged process. The third generation of Chromoly Forging in the 4-7 irons incorporates a milling slot that extends wider from the heel to toe. Paired with an extremely thin face on each iron, the JPX 923 promotes high ball speeds to provide you the distance you need and expect.

The 8-GW irons — comprised of 1025E pure select mild carbon steel — are slightly more compact, which offers a “players design” that better players will prefer. This half of the set offers incredible distance control and predictability, which is exactly what you want.

In totality, the JPX 923 irons are truly a marvel in terms of design, shape, and modern technology all rolled into one. But how did they feel?

Performance and Feel

In the YouTube video mentioned earlier, the very first comment I make after hitting the JPX 923 is about how incredible they felt.

Mizuno has always made the best feeling irons in the game. That’s subjective, I understand. But there’s a reason why I prefer a soft, muted feel in my irons: Mizuno engrained that into my golf soul.

The JPX 923 Forged irons feel incredible. Powerful is another adjective that comes to mind, especially when noticing their penetrating ball flight and distance capabilities, especially in the long irons. While lofted on the stronger side, these irons offered an average of 10 more yards across the set when compared to more traditional player irons.

There are pros and cons to playing longer distances in your irons, especially if you’re a better player. It will take some time to dial in your new yardages, and there is the occasional outlier when you really catch one clean with these irons. I must admit: I don’t love the risk of flying over a green unexpectedly, but that’s on me to account for when choosing my club for a shot.

Despite their distance builds, the JPX 923 offers superb launch and left-to-right shot dispersion control to help you hit the ball straighter every time. Once you get your distances dialed in, there’s no doubt more greens in regulation will result.

Overall Impression

The Mizuno JPX 923 Forged irons were one of two options I could have chosen to play via my custom fitting numbers. The other option — the Mizuno Pro 225 — has a cleaner “players” look that will appeal to more golfers. However, I chose the JPX 923 Forged because of their repeatability, higher launch, and control in terms of shot dispersion. Mind you: they also look pretty slick, albeit in a modern cavity design.

These irons are hot, to be clear. They are very long in terms of shot distance, which may or may not be something you need in your game. Once you get the distances figured out, however, there’s no doubt that you’ll score extremely well with the Mizuno JPX 923 Forged.
